(More customer reviews)I have been using gesso as a primer for canvas since I started painting in 2007. I am now using it in grissale painting. I find that the Bob Ross brand gesso covers better than the competition and leaves a nice tooth for painting. It evens out the canvas, without skips and it covers nicely with one coat.
I have used it on canvas, luan, straight wood and canvas panel. I like the matte finish that I can get with this gesso. I tend to use the white, gray and the black gessos and have added some colored acrylic paint to the white gesso to make a beautiful effect as an acrylic background for floral paintings, for example, a bit of red produces a beautiful pink, which can be mottled with a sea sponge.
I have also used greens, gold and purples to great effect.
This can then be overpainted with oils, or I can continue on with another acrylic paint.
One thing that I specifically like is that the dye is uniform from bottle to bottle. I never have a problem matching. You might not think that matching gray is too hard to do, but it's harder than it seems. Working in large formats often requires more than one bottle for a series of paintings. Color matching is essential.
Another thing that I like is that the top reseals easily. I hate paint cans. I dislike tubes. Check out my site for some examples of use of this brand of gesso. [...]
