(More customer reviews)The description of this item says that it is "pure spirits of gum turpentine". This is incorrect.
The chemical is actually d-limonene, an extract of citrus rinds. This is great stuff for those who want to paint using a strong paint thinner, but don't want the worries of something as toxic as pure turpentine. Mind you, this does have a certain amount of toxicity, so always use in a well ventilated room and do not drink it. Unlike turpentine, d-limonene does not leech oxygen out of the surrounding air, and evaporates harmlessly into the atmosphere, where it's broken down into harmless compounds.
It has a lower toxicity than deodorized mineral spirits as well, but is quite fragrant (strong citrus smell) so take care you don't have a citrus allergy.
It is as strong a thinner as turpentine, meaning it can be used with damar or mastic varnishes when painting, unlike mineral spirits. I cannot recommend this stuff enough for the serious oil painter who is worried about toxicity.
