(More customer reviews)These are basically round pans of rich, creamy, BRIGHTLY pigmented drawing pastels. They have that dry chalky consistency, but unlike traditional pastels these do not form a cloud of dust in the air, on the worksurface, or on your canvas/paper as you use them. It's a whole new experience for pastel users, and these pans of pastel are perfect for painters, traditional pastel artists, crafters (perfect to "age" a piece of paper by rubbing over the edges), art journalers (no EASIER way to create a more beautiful, blended journal foundation), etc. Because of their ease of use and low mess factor, there are a ton of different applications for these lovely paint/pastels.
You can use them similar to traditional pastels- the only difference is you dip an applicator into the pastel as opposed to directly applying it to your media. A variety of applicators come with the set in a variety of widths, shapes, and tips, as well as full coverage sponges- and all of them are easily cleaned by either a few quick swipes on a clean paper towel or a light bath with mild soap- just make sure you let the foam dry before putting it back into contact with the Pan Pastel.
This particular set contains the basic colors you will need- bright red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet, a few variations on the basics (turquoise, a lime green, magenta, etc.), black, white, and several shades of browns. It's a nice kit to start you out, but you WILL want more.
I also recommend getting the palette tray- I did not and it's been frustrating not to have them. I assumed the pan pastels stacked on each other, but basically they SCREW onto each other to in order to access a color, you are constantly screwing and unscrewing stacks of these guys. And you can't really see color from the side of the little bottles, so half the time you screw out the wrong color.
And if you have ANY fingernails at all, the screwing means your often dipping your nail into the pot and scooping out little divits of pan pastel. So I would go for the tray- I'm definitely getting one, as well as more varieties of applicators.
This is SO incredible- I've been creating art for over 20 years and this is a whole new way to approach working with pastels and what can be done with them. I can't wait to experiment more. The colors are rich and bright, the consistency is smooth and super fine without the all that dust, and the color glides on beautifully.
I can't wait until I can get some more colors to add to my little collection.
Highly recommended for not only artists, but also anyone who enjoys working with paper, paint, stamps, etc.
