Instructions were followed to depress the tip in the tip up position and then in the tip down position depress slightly to fill. It seems that on the first 3 pens, the tip is not secured in the body of the pen (you can just pull it out). Maybe this is intended, but the needs for an extra fine point pen are great accuracy and the tip wobbles when you try to write with it and this defeats the purpose. Elmer's makes a similar paint marker and while you can also pull the wick out of it, I could only find a fine point. It was too large for my purpose, but it was much more stable to use.
