I use the crackle medium to add a textured and distressed effect on paintings, dolls, boxes, frames and this medium creates an effect that looks authentic, whereas other mediums look sloppy, blotchy, and not actual crackle, more like stripes. The crackle texture created with Jo Sonja's, depending on thickness of application- can look anywhere from spider web thin splintering crackles to very thick. Also, with a certain combination of colors I have created a very interesting effect that everyone first thinks is leather- when it is actually acrylic. I love this product!
