I'd recommend Golden matte gel medium without reservation for paint extension, glazing and collage/altered art. It's high quality and high performance.
This gel medium has a variety of uses:
> extends acrylic paint colors; reduces gloss and viscocity while maintaining hue. Will hold moderate peaks and preserve brush characteristics.
> increases the transparency and clarity of already transparent colors in glazes and washes.
> archival quality ground, gluing agent and sealant. Full-bodied, dries clear, leaves no tack. Plus, it won't crack, change color or turn milky over time.
Of the many mediums on the market, I've used Golden, Liquitex, Winsor-Newton, Grumbacher and Talens. I've found one is prefferable to another depending upon the application. For color extension, I prefer Golden or Winsor; for adhesive, collage, and altered art, Liquitex, then Golden.
BTW, online I've found big price variations for gel mediums. For example, 1-gallon of matte gel medium ranged from $51-85/GOLDEN, $47-55/LIQUITEX, $31/UTRECHT, and $23/NASCO. Caveat emptor. Shop around.
