I bought the All Media Easel Artist Set which gives you a good assortment of oil, acrylic and watercolors to experiment with. I think that set is a good value for beginners and it comes in a really nicely made wooden box that gives you a place to store all your art supplies. The brushes and plastic pallet knives that come with this set aren't very good for serious work so I bought this One Stroke Folk Art Brush Pack and the Stainless Steel Pallet Knife 5-Piece Set.
I am very pleased with the wide variety and feel of these brushes. The price is right too (10 brushes for $20). I am just doing simple painting projects now, like making some signs. I bought both of Nancy Reyner's books Acrylic Revolution and Acrylic Innovation. These books are excellent for beginners. They give you hundreds of painting tips plus basic stuff like how you use and take care of your painting tools. They are like having a private teacher to answer all your questions. She has created two "must have" books for people like myself who can't take a formal painting class. The only thing I need now is to develop my skills and I am looking forward to many hours of painting and learning.
I highly recommend all the products and books mentioned above. All of them are available from Amazon.
