The Derwent pencils, unlike most watercolor pencils today, utilize the newer woodless design, where the color is embedded within a single substrate that makes up the pencil itself. This not only reduces issues regarding splintering and cracking of the pencil as it is sharpened, but also makes for a much longer life for the pencil itself, due to the much greater amount of coloring material in each pencil. When reviewing the higher cost of these pencils, take that important fact in mind, because these pencils have extremely long lives compared to the more traditional types.
Color laydown for these pencils is excellent, with a generally smooth and effortless characteristic. Because of the woodless design, these pencils are much heavier than the traditional watercolor type (because the color material is heavier than the wood it replaces). But the pencils have a very good, weighty "feel," and their overall handling characteristics are excellent, with a slightly flexible shaft. Again, this is an advantage, because an accidental drop on a hard floor is not likely to break the pencil as is more commonly seen in the traditional style. The colors blossom beautifully upon wetting, with rich hues and nice uniformity.
I can easily recommend these pencils to the artist wishing to work in the watercolor pencil medium.
NOTE: Do not confuse these pencils with the traditional Derwent Watercolor pencils! The Aquatone pencils are a completely different technology ("woodless"). They are as different as can be, and if you have only used the traditional type, you owe it to yourself to look into this newer technology.
